Described as warm and friendly, benign, affable, with a sense of humour, eyes twinkling behind horn-rimmed glasses, and old world manners, Arthur Bleksley believed universities have an important role 'as the centre of the intellectual life, not merely of a few thousand students and a few hundred members of its staff, but of the entire community which they exist to serve.'
In his early career, Prof Bleksley was involved in research in astrophysics and astronomy on variable stars. He was an outstanding university teacher of applied mathematics, and helped pioneer science awareness in South Africa through his articles in the press, his radio broadcasts and his presentations at the Johannesburg Planetarium.
If you would like to continue the tradition set by Arthur Bleksley, please consider contributing to this special scholarship in his name.
Mr Paramesan Mathen BSc (200), BSc (Hons) (2001), who donated to the scholarship says:
"i was a recipient of such a scholarship during my time at Wits and I know what a difference it makes in terms of not having financial concerns getting in the way of furthering your studies."
