The new School of Public Health building – one of the 'Big 5' capital projects identified by Wits as being urgently required to provide the capacity and cutting edge facilities expected of a world-class university – is nearing completion.

Thanks to the support of the Department of Higher Education & Training, 5 trusts and foundations, 11 corporates and 521 individual donors, we now have the funding necessary to complete the new School of Public Health building.

Since the sod was turned in November 2010, construction work has progressed steadily and we hope to officially launch the new building in November 2012, with a special conference on public health.

The school’s mission and aim is to produce skilled public health practitioners, appropriately trained for South African and African conditions, while at the same time nurturing independent academic endeavour designed to advance the acquisition of new knowledge.

The 4-storey state-of-the-art building is one of the “Big 5” capital projects identified by the University as being urgently required to provide the capacity and cutting edge facilities expected of a world-class university.

Once completed, the new building will provide:

  • improved facilities for postgraduate training and research, including visiting academics;
  • the necessary space for debate and greater interaction between the School’s nine different units;
  • accessibility for the School’s work to a wider range of stakeholders.

"I would like to thank everyone involved in making this dream a reality, including all those who donated to the project and everyone who provided support, some over many years," said Project Leader Professor Sharon Fonn.
