Thanks to the generous support of both corporate and individual donors, the University has raised over R40 million to complete the Chamber of Mines 4th Quadrant.
The Chamber of Mines Building accommodates shared Faculty facilities as well as the Schools of Mining Engineering and Electrical and Information Engineering, disciplines critical to the South African economy.
The Department of Higher Education has provided an infrastructural grant worth R80 million – and a grant of R9 million from the Anglo American Chairman’s Fund has resulted in a world-class Mine Design Laboratory being constructed.
The new facility can accommodate a hundred students - 90 of whom can be assigned to a computer during classes.
Students will be able to get the practical hands-on experience needed to design mines to industry standards, using the latest technology.
Completion of this landmark building underpins Wits’ commitment to raise the throughput of engineering graduates to about 600 per annum, to improve the quality of teaching and learning and to increase the faculty’s undergraduate enrolments by 30% above the 2007 intake capacity.
