Thanks to the generous support of 11 corporate and 33 individual donors, the University has raised over R40 million to complete the Chamber of Mines 4th Quadrant – and refurbishment of the Chamber of Mines Engineering Building is now underway.

The Department of Higher Education has provided an infrastructural grant worth R80 million.

Engineering student numbers have more than doubled over the last 10 years and better infrastructure and resources are urgently needed to ensure they benefit from the highest standards of teaching. The new building includes research laboratories and postgraduate spaces, as well as a renovated library and atrium.

Completion of this landmark building on West Campus underpins Wits’ commitment to raise the throughput of engineering graduates from approximately 400 to about 600 per annum, to improve the quality of teaching and learning and to increase the faculty’s undergraduate enrolments by 30% above the 2007 intake capacity.

The Chamber of Mines Building accommodates shared Faculty facilities as well as the Schools of Mining Engineering and Electrical and Information Engineering, disciplines critical to the South African economy.
