The University of the Witwatersrand Fund, Inc (Wits Fund) is incorporated in the State of New York and is an exempt organization under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the USA.

A stated purpose of the Wits Fund Inc is education and health care at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). Wits Fund, Inc has identified various departments and causes at Wits that Wits Fund Inc supports, like the Medical School and its related activities, and the Law School and its related activities including the Mandela Institute; Rock Art; the Wits Libraries; Wits Arts and Art Gallery. Wits Fund approves additional areas of support from time to time.

Internal Revenue Service regulations require that charities remitting funds abroad must be prepared to account for, and prove oversight of, all such funds. In addition to Wits assistance monitoring funds remitted by Wits Fund, Inc to Wits, Wits Fund, Inc has control and a discretion as to the use of contributions and Wits Fund, Inc must (a) review and approve Wits projects as being in furtherance of Wits Fund Inc's own exempt purposes, and (b) conduct is own screening and approval of suggested programs.
